Schultz takes third at national

St Louis, MO - Jon Schultz beat two-time US champion Rick Wilcox of Virginia 2-1 in overtime to take third place at this year's ASA National Championships in St Louis. His path to the final was blocked by 2006 U19 champion Daniel Cranston from Maryland, who beat him 1-0. The title was retained by Zach Walker, also by a 1-0 scoreline.

LMSC's other representatives were eliminated in the group stage and played in the consolation round. Steve Laskey reached the semi-finals of a very strong competition, losing 0-1 to eventual winner John Sarra of SLSL, while Brian Bostelman beat SLSL's Mitch Morice on shots to reach the quarter-finals where he lost 0-3 to Idaho's Jonathan Smith. Laskey took 3rd place in the consolation bracket with a 5-0 win over Texan Scott Givens.

Ewer wins double

Holland, MI - Mike Ewer won both the Express Cup and the Michigan Masters played in Holland, Michigan today.

The Express Cup was reduced down from a Swiss Ladder to a standard group competition due to some last minute withdrawals. Trent Bellew, making his ASA debut in his last tournaments in Michigan, started off the Express Cup in fine style beating Maple City's Brian Bostelman 1-0, a win which helped him on the way to a second place finish.

Brian Bostelman set the Express Cup record for quickest win with three goals in 14:48 to win his match against Amanda Ewer, a revenge for the 0-1 loss in Indianapolis last month.

A team match was played between Holland and an All-Star team consisting of Grand Rapids players and Brian Bostelman. Holland won all three games by 1-0 scorelines and took the match 3-0.

Amanda Ewer recovered from the Express Cup loss to take another feather out of Brian Bostelman's cap, scoring with just seconds left to tie their Michigan Masters group game 1-1, which earnt her a place in the semi-finals.

Bostelman took revenge on Bellew in the semi-final by a 1-0 scoreline, with the Ewers' match-up ending on the same score in Mike's favour.

Mike Ewer opened up the floodgates in the final, scoring two in 30 seconds and a total of three second-half goals to win a 4-0 romp.

The turnout was less than expected in the end, but good play was had by all. And it was a good send-off for Trent Bellew as he makes his way to the BPL.

Schultz continues sweep of LMSC

Indianapolis, IN - Jon Schultz continued his containment of LMSC events with an almost perfect 9-1-0 record to lift the Speedway Classic. A total of nine players representing 5 different clubs from the region got together to kickstart Indianapolis Subbuteo.

The venue, Games 2 Die 4, was very receptive and look like they will start selling World Table Soccer's Superfooty real soon.

Jon Schultz defeated Cincinnati based host Steve Laskey 2-0 in the final, having beaten Jeff Drake of St Louis in the semi. Laskey beat Michigan's Mike Ewer in the semi-final by a 2-1 score, making it four tournaments in a row he has now eliminated the Englishman. In the consolation final, Indianapolis' Barrett Crites beat Amanda Ewer 2-0. Amanda had earned a bye to the final in the consolation round with an historic 1-0 win over LaPorte's Brian Bostelman.

Indy 500?

Indianapolis, IN - This weekend the "other" motor city, where they drive them fast rather than build them, is the venue to the latest LMSC event. Cincinatti's Steve Laskey is co-hosting the event to help Indianapolis get on their feet, and the tournament has attracted 10 registrations including just 2 from outside the circuit: St Louis' Jeff Drake and Brad DeMunbrun.

The tournament will be held at "Games To Die For" on the west side of the city, not too far from the Indianapolis Speedway.

Return to Windsor

Windsor, ON - After a successful first FISTF Grand Prix and Open event just six weeks ago, MiSTFA announced today they would be hosting another Canadian FISTF weekend this coming September.

The event is a slight downgrade from the previous one, in that the Teams competition will be just an International Open rather than a Grand Prix. There will still be both Grand Prix and International Open competitions for Individuals.

Further information to follow.

Schultz victorious in Maple City pilot

LaPorte, IN - Jon Schultz lifted the Supporter's Cup in LaPorte with a 2-0 win over Cincinatti's Steve Laskey. Ten players from four states attended the tournament, the first to be held in the area. Jeff Drake of St Louis gave up a half time lead to lose the semi to Schultz 2-1, while Laskey ousted another SLSL player, Darren Koffman, in the other semi.

Koffman had finished top of his group with a 3-2 win over Drake. He once said "if I beat Drake in a tournament I'll run around the room with my shirt off". He duly obliged. Laskey reached the semi with a 3-1 extra time win over Holland, Michigan's Mike Ewer. It was the third tournament in a row that Ewer was eliminated by Laskey.

In a team friendly, Maple City SC lost 0-4 to a St Louis SL team strengthened with the loan of Steve Laskey. Jon Schultz lost his game against Jeff Drake 1-3, while Brian Bostelman was edged out 0-1 by Darren Koffman.

LMSC to shrink, but concept to grow

Holland, MI - The Lake Michigan Subbuteo Circuit announced today it plans on shrinking its geographic footprint to the immediate shoreline of Lake Michigan. The new area will cover West Michigan, NW Indiana and Chicago.

Indianapolis will join Cincinnati and Dayton in a new Ohio Valley circuit which will alternate dates with LMSC. The rotation will be tested in the latter months of the 2006/07 season, and go into full effect in the 2007/08 season.

The Ohio Valley circuit will be administered by the ASA's Development Officer Steve Laskey, who now lives in Cincinnati.

Schultz helps Sparta to Grand Prix title

Windsor, ON - It was a weekend of frustration and learning for the LMSC representatives, but for Jon Schultz it was golden. He helped Sparta Spreeathen of Berlin to the Team Grand Prix title in Windsor. A win by Marcus Tilgner against Christian Haas was the key result, reversing a loss to the Austrian youngster the day before.

Other LMSC members were shut out of the individual tournaments at the group stage, Mike Ewer missed out on a Grand Prix QF slot in a shootout against Steven Laskey of Cincinnati, and lost to the same opponent the next day to complete an empty weekend. Michigan Kestrels achieved a tie against a weakened GTASC of Toronto, but finished bottom of the four team GP group on goal difference.

Schultz leads Maple sweep

Jenison, MI - Two individual wins and a hand in the team win for Indiana's Jon Schultz, who after a slow start found his true form and blew away all competition on Saturday in Jenison.

The visiting Maple City club took advantage of some patchy form from the Michigan hosts. Mike Ewer was off to a flyer with 3-0 wins over Brian Bostelman and Ian Roy, sandwiching a respectable 1-2 loss to Jon Schultz, but then plummeted down to earth with a 0-1 loss to Roy in the Michigan Cup semi-finals.

Ian himself was not on his best form. He scored just four goals in eight games. But one of those was enough to put him into the Michigan Cup Final.

Maple City earned revenge for their loss in the July interstate friendly when they represented Indiana against the Michigan Kestrels. This time the 2-1 score was in their favour, as Brian Bostelman swung the match the other way with a 1-0 win over Ian Roy. Ian would have needed to win the game as Jon Schultz - playing Thatcher Berends - was outscoring Mike Ewer, who was having trouble putting more than three past Matt Findley.

Although it was a small turnout, just six players plus Amanda Ewer who rested for the Michigan Cup but played the MiSTFA Challenge Cup, it was a fun day's play despite the constant distractions from idle young soccer players. There's too little common courtesy and manners taught to kids these days for a busy soccer venue like this to be chosen again.

LaPorte Tournament Cancelled

LaPorte, IN - Due to a lack of availability of local players and limited commitments from travellers, the Maple City Subbuteo Club has cancelled its October 21 tournament.

MCSC founder Jon Schultz asked everyone in the region to focus on the next tournament, November 4th in Jenison outside Grand Rapids.

Ewer gets double revenge for LaPorte defeat

Holland, MI - Last time the Maple City Subbuteo Club were in town, Brian Bostelman stopped Mike Ewer's chance at a final spot by beating him into second place in their group on a 1-0 scoreline. That defeat condemned Mike to a semi-final against MCSC #1 Jon Schultz.

This time it was different. Fresh off his 3-0 local league win over Mike Van Buren in midweek, Ewer put in a tight performance to earn a 1-0 win, then followed that up with a 2-0 win a couple of hours later.

This edition of the Beker van Holland was so beginner-orientated that no standings were kept and no groups or brackets were played out.

New MCSC member Matt Findley played a two game series against Thatcher Berends, tying the first one 0-0, while Thatcher won the second 2-0. Thatcher also took on Brian Bostelman, going down in a respectable 1-2 score.

Two possible new MCSC members also got their first Subbuteo under their belts, Jared Saunders and Nate Reutter played some extensive practice.

Circuit to start in October

Indianapolis, IN - Indianapolis needs more time to find suitable locations for tournaments so have waived their September slot in the circuit. With just two weeks to go before September starts, we will not be filling the empty slot.

This means the first LMSC tournament will be in LaPorte, Indiana, on October 21st, to be hosted by Jon Schultz' Maple City Subbuteo Club.

Michigan Cup is in "the Zone"

Jenison, MI - The Michigan Cup weekend, MiSTFA's first ASA tournament of the 2006/07 season, already has a venue. We are the welcome guests of the Soccer Zone in Jenison, which for our out of state visitors is in the SW corner of the Grand Rapids metro area.

The venue has some tricky directions so please contact us for exact arrival details. If you want to map out the distance, put [596 Baldwin St, Jenison, MI 49428] in your map software or site. It is located to the south of the Meijer lot, behind Culvers and Pages In Time. Yes, a Subbuteo tournament next to a Culvers. This could be a winner! Bear in mind it will be November though...

The tournament will include the Michigan Cup for individuals on the Saturday, and a team tournament, the Great Lakes Shield, on the Sunday. Other tournaments may be put in where necessary to produce two days' full play. Local accommodation information will be released later. If you need digs for the weekend please let us know!

There will be a minimal entrance fee, in return we must stress no outside food or drink will be allowed. We will provide an optional lunch. Sports drinks and pop will be available.

We look forward to visitors from around Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and beyond! Please register your intent to play at this tournament by sending an e-mail to: info@mistfa.org

Schultz wins "Brick"

St Louis, MO - Top LMSC player Jon Schultz must have shaken off the rust in the recent Beker Van Holland in Michigan. He went to St Louis to compete in the "Brick Tamland Celebrity Classic", an ASA Open, and won the title beating Tim Boone 4-0. This is the same Tim Boone who won the FISTF IO and reached the final of the Midwest Major back in April!

Chicago's Erik Haefke and Ilias Gikas both reached the quarter-final stage. Gikas lost in overtime to Jon Schultz, while Haefke was taken out 0-4 by Tim Boone.

A sign that some top class flicking is coming to our region very shortly!
