Starter Set

Equipment

A starter set is the ideal way to begin playing Subbuteo. With plenty of change out of a hundred you will get a box containing everything you need to set up a pitch on your dining table or den carpet. Available from >> Subbuteo World at around £41 (current exchange rate puts that at around $70) plus shipping.

  • Cloth pitch
  • Plastic framed goals
  • Two teams in generic red/white and blue/white uniforms
  • Balls
  • Other accessories such as referees, corner flags to decorate your new table soccer arena

Some comments on the contents of this starter set and future "upgrades" you may wish to consider. Please bear in mind that MiSTFA does not insist on any of the options listed on this page. We are merely providing you with information about how upgradable the game is. Playing the game on your dining table is fun!

Cloth Pitch

The cloth pitch is what Subbuteo started on. It has improved a lot over the years. Initially a pitch wasn't even included in the set and the instructions asked you to mark out the field on an old army blanket! A cool iron on the unprinted side will get rid of any kinks or creases. There are "premium" pitches available which can either be rolled up in a tube or stuck down permanently on a board.

Plastic Framed Goals

The goals included in a Subbuteo starter kit are simply placed at the appropriate mark on the pitch when you need to play the game. Later on if you decide to mount your pitch on a board you may wish to consider obtaining metal goals and fixing them to the board permanently.

Red & Blue Teams

Just like foosball, Subbuteo has its standard red and blue teams as eternal adversaries. Some previous special edition starter sets have included the current top two teams in the world or perhaps the hosts and holders of the FIFA World Cup. The selection of teams however is not limited to just red and blue. Check the online retailers for their latest stock. Jamaica versus Bayern Munich? In Subbuteo it is possible! Those with a steady hand have even painted their own teams with the same enamel paints used to decorate model aircraft such as those from Airfix or Revell.

Balls

Two balls are usually provided with the set. However if you have a dancing Doberman in your house, or your mum walked in the room just as you sent your shot half an inch past the far post, you can obtain replacements!

Other Accessories

Some sets include referees and corner flags and other matchday decorations. You can also obtain terracing, grandstands, floodlights, tracksuited substitutes, cameramen, etc... although once these are all set up you can barely play the game any more! The avid collector will have a display stadium and a competition pitch - or at least roll up the Astropitch and move it to a table with more elbow room.

DIY Startup

Check the DIY set page for full details on our recommendations for this project which will cost around $150 all inclusive.
